Man crushed to death by shop roller shutter in Woking

A man has been crushed to death by a roller shutter whilst working at a commercial premies in Woking.
Emergency services were called just after 9am to Commercial Way in Woking. Police have sealed off the area and a joint investigation has been launched by Surrey Police and the HSE.

A nearby shop worker said that he saw the man working on the shutter and then heard a loud crash. Next thing I know is the ambulance turn up outside the shop. There were Police and Ambulance and then the fire service also turned up the road. The road was full of emergency services. It looked and we knew that it was bad when they started to put up the tent and the guy wasn’t going to make it they did their best for the guy he added.

The man was hit in the head there was lots of blood coming from his head he was son the pavement just outside the shop. It all happened very quickly the police and ambulance where here first it happened just after 9am this morning. One coffee shop worker who asked not to be named said she turned up for work around 9.20 this morning and she could see paramedics working on a man in his fifties they were giving him CPR it didn’t look good. He was on the pavement just laying there whilst they worked on him.

Police scene of crime officers arrived at the shop and a tent has been erected around the shop front. The roller shutter that struck the man can clearly be seen half of the ground with one end attached to the ceiling. Work mens tool lay abounded on the floor. Scene of crime officers took away a large amount of screw samples and spent most of the morning photographing the scene

Surrey fire and rescue service confirmed that they where also called to assist the Police and the ambulance service.
It is understood the crews were mobilised just after 11am. Surrey Police issued the following statement:We’d just like to let you know that Commercial Way between Chertsey Road and Church Street East is currently closed and is likely to be so for a few hours, so please avoid the area.
“We attended with other emergency services this morning following a report of a man sustaining head injuries in a place of work.
“The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The Health and Safety Executive has been advised and enquiries are ongoing.
“Thanks for your understanding.”
